이산 (Isan/Isaan) 언어는 태국 북동부에 위치한 코랏 고원지대에 사는 인구 2천 2백 만 사람들의 언어로, 라오스의 라오어와 표기법은 다르지만 어휘가 매우 유사합니다. 이 지역의 면적은 태국 영토의 1/3에 해당하며, 북서쪽이 200여 미터 높이에서 남동쪽으로 해발 60 m 정도로 경사져 있습니다. 비가 많지 않아 농사를 지어도 작물이 풍부하지는 않으며, 여러 자원들도 많지 않은 편입니다. 따라서 많은 사람들이 주변의 큰 도시나 해외로 나가 공장 노동자로 일하고 있기도 합니다. 

 

신앙적으로 불교가 우세하며, 전통 신앙과 맞물려 다양한 의례를 행합니다. 조슈아 프로젝트에 의하면 미전도종족에 속하며, 신약성경이 2016년에 번역된 것으로 나오지만, 번역의 질이 확인되지 않은 개인 번역입니다. 위클리프 태국에서는 성경이야기 구연 방식으로 제대로 검증된 번역을 시도하기로 했고 조이 선교사가 그 번역프로젝트를 감당하기로 했습니다.

The Isan (Isaan) language is spoken by 22 million people in the Korat Highlands of northeastern Thailand and is very similar in vocabulary to the Lao language of Laos, although it is written differently. The area covers a third of Thailand's territory and slopes from over 200 meters high in the northwest to about 60 meters above sea level in the southeast. It doesn't get much rain, so farming doesn't produce abundant crops, and it also doesn't have many resources, so many people go to the larger cities around it or abroad to work as factory workers. 

 

Religiously, Buddhism is dominant, and various rituals are practiced in conjunction with traditional beliefs. According to the Joshua Project, they are an unreached people group, and while the New Testament was translated in 2016, it is a private translation whose quality has not been verified. Wycliffe Thailand decided to attempt a properly verified translation using the Bible storytelling method, and Missionary Joy agreed to take on the project.
