작년과 달리 고난 주간에 일정이 잡힌 터라, 플레인즈 크리(Plains Cree) 번역 담당자들과 우즈 크리(Woods Cree) 번역 담당자들이 불참했습니다. 그러나 올 해에는 James Bay Cree 언어에서, 구약성경번역을 결정하고 두 사람의 대표, Mary-Jane 과 Juliette 을 보냈습니다. 

토론토한인장로교회는 올 해 교회 창립 50주년을 기념하며, 전 교인이 참여하는 성경필사를 통해 영어/한글 성경을 한 권씩 만드는 한편, 필사 1장 당 5불씩 헌금하는 것으로 하여, 그 금액을 크리 원주민 성경번역 사역을 위해 드리기로 했습니다. 7명의 교인들이 이번 웍샵 참관과 원주민 사역자들과의 교제에 참여했습니다. 

토론토한인장로교회에서는 앞으로 계속 기도하면서, 이 원주민들의 성경이 번역되었을 때, 그들의 성경책도 한글 필사 성경 옆에 함께 보전하기를 원하고 있습니다. 

(맨 윗줄부터 Alice Reed, Junpyo, Martin Reed / Isaac, George, Cheyenne, Amanda/ Tshiueten, Ruby. 현재 앨리스와 마틴 부부는 이 나스카피 원주민 마을인 Kawawachikamach에서 6개월 짜리 인턴십을 시작한 지 한 달이 되었다. 나스카피 원주민 구약 팀 리더십 아래서 훈련 받고 있는 중이다. 사진은 '잠언'이라는 구약의 책 제목을 어떻게 나스카피 원주민들에게 잘 와닿는 말로 번역할까 논의하는 중이다. 마틴이 준표에게 무슨 이야기를 주고받는지 설명하는 중. 'wisdom book'이라고 하기보다는 'wise sayings'로 하자는 쪽으로 의견이 기울고 있다.)

참여한 2명의 청년들 중, 이준표 형제의 짧은 메모를 간단히 아래와 같이 우리말로 요약하고, 영어 메모를 이어서 나눕니다. 

제가 7년 동안 단기 선교를 다녀온 크리스천 아일랜드 원주민들은 오지브웨 언어를 사용하는데, 그들 스스로 자기 말 하는 것을 거의 들어본 적이 없었다. 그러나 이번 웍샵을 보면서, 원주민들의 언어와 문화가 완전히 소실된 게 아니라, 여전히 회복될 가능성이 큰 것을 깨달았다. 그리고 선교사들이 원주민들과 함께 그들의 방식대로 일하는 걸 보는 게 인상적이었다. 매리-제인의 간증을 통해 원주민들의 언어로 된 성경이 얼마나 원주민들의 마음에 직접 와닿는지, 그리고 자신들의 언어/문화에 맞게 예수님을 따르게 도와주는 지를 알 수 있었다. 내가 참여하는 크리스천 아일랜드 원주민들에게 그들의 언어와 문화를 발전시켜 나가도록 도움이 되어야 겠다.

•  Very inspiring to see the Natives speaking in their own language. Reminds me that their culture has not been completely lost, and has a great chance of coming back and being restored. In Christian Island where I go, only the oldest generations can speak Ojibwe but even then I don’t think I’ve ever seen them using it. Seeing them speaking comfortably in their own language was so good to see!
•   Made me think again about the importance of Native languages. Because we don’t ever seen First Nations speaking in their native tongues, nor is it ever in the media, it almost makes me think that they are not languages (kind of equated in my head simply like a dialect of a language, and not an independent language that is valuable in itself). This time reminded me that their tongues are languages, and that they are very important to restoring the lost identity of the First Nations
•  Very great to see Bill working comfortably with the Natives (and from what I saw), in a way that is sort of the Native-style. It was a bit different from the typical academic classroom setting, but the style they worked in seemed like it was right to their culture. It was also great to see that the Natives were leading the work, with missionaries standing alongside to support and offer assistance they could
•  Inspiring to hear the power of God’s Word in one’s mother tongue through Mary Jane’s testimony, how it is different, especially for Natives, who have lost much of their culture, to read the Bible in James Bay Cree and not in English
•  Humbling how far these translators travelled just for this one week of the conference. They came from isolated reserves that you can’t even access with cars, and the James Bay translators drove a ridiculous distance to come for this meeting
•  Great to see Natives believing and following God in their native-way and culture. Something seems very right about it
•  Gives me lots of things to think about how we should respect the natives at Christian Island and encourage them to bring back their culture as well.
