지난 9/22-26일 한 주간 동안 원주민 성경번역 사역자들을 위한 웍샵이 캘거리 FCJ 센터에서 열려 콰악왈라, 블랙풋, 아니시니니이모윈(오지-크리), 나스카피 원주민 공동체가 참여하였고, 은혜 중에 잘 마쳤습니다. 목요일에는 캘거리한인장로교회, 포도나무교회(The Vine Church), 에드몬턴한인안디옥장로교회 등에서 목회자들과 선교사들이 방문하여 함께 찬양과 말씀 기도의 교제를 나눴습니다.
A workshop for Indigenous Bible translation workers was held at the Calgary FCJ Center from September 22-26. Participants included members of the Kwakwala, Blackfoot, Anishinaabek (Oji-Cree), and Naskapi Indigenous communities, and it concluded successfully in grace. On Thursday, pastors and missionaries from Calgary Korean Presbyterian Church, The Vine Church, and Edmonton Korean Antioch Presbyterian Church visited, sharing fellowship through praise, the Word, and prayer.
이날 함께 방문한 SIM 소속, 포도나무교회 파송 박정훈 선교사는 밴쿠버 아일랜드에서 원주민선교사로 훈련받고, 코크레인에 있는 침례신학교에서 신학교육을 받은 뒤, 현재 식시카 지역의 블랙풋 원주민들을 섬기고 있습니다. 말씀 나눔에서, 원주민들이 이 모든 어려운 상황 가운데서도 서로 사랑하기를 자기 몸같이 하는 것을 보면서 많은 배움을 얻었다고 얘기하면서 계속해서 하나님의 사랑으로 회복하시는 공동체가 되기를 기도했습니다. 찬양을 인도한 평신도선교사 최병권 집사는, 찬송 때마다 열방과 이 땅이 어린양께 영광돌리는 이 찬양이 감사와 기도로 올려지길 원한다며 Hallelujah To The Lamb을 함께 불렀고, 이 선교사는 박 선교사의 메시지에 이어, 이미 원주민들 안에 행하고 계신 하나님의 역사와 그들의 하나님 자녀된 일들이, 성경번역 사역을 통해 말씀의 빛이 비춰질 때 명확히 드러나고 이사야가 예언한 대로 흑암에 앉은 이들에게 빛이 비춰지는 역사가 있기를 함께 기도하자고 했습니다.

Missionary John Park, commissioned by SIM Canada and The Vine Church, who visited with us that day, trained as an indigenous missionary on Vancouver Island and received theological education at Cochrane Baptist Seminary. He currently serves the Blackfoot indigenous people in the Siksika region. During the sharing of God's Word, he spoke of learning much from observing how the Indigenous people love one another as their own bodies even amidst all these difficult circumstances, and prayed that they would continue to be a community restored by God's love. Lay missionary and deacon Byeong-kwon Choi,
who led the worship, expressed his desire that each hymn would be lifted up as thanksgiving and prayer, with the nations and this land giving glory to the Lamb, and led everyone in singing “Hallelujah To The Lamb.” Following Missionary Park's message, this missionary urged everyone to pray together that God's work already active within the indigenous people and their identity as God's children would be clearly revealed when the light of the Word shines through the Bible translation ministry. He prayed that, as Isaiah prophesied, there would be a work where light shines upon those sitting in darkness.

이 날 세션에서 원주민 언어가 더 건강하고 활발하게 사용되도록 어떻게 성경번역과 함께 언어 활성화를 꾀할 수 있을지 논의 되었고, 각 언어별 사역보고에서는 콰왁왈라 언어에서 진행된 성경이야기 번역과 오디오 북 녹음 이야기가 나눠졌습니다. 브로디와 그의 부인이 녹음작업에 참여했고, 부인이 녹음한 내용을 AI를 통해 장성한 아들의 목소리로 변환시킨 부분을 나눴는데, 그 소리가 정말 똑같아서 다들 놀랐습니다. 더 놀라운 것은, 엄마의 목소리가 자기 목소리로 바뀐 걸 들은 아들이 자신도 해보겠다고 풍랑을 잠잠케 하신 예수님 이야기의 녹음 작업에 동참한 것이었습니다.

During today’s sessions, discussions focused on how Bible translation and language revitalization efforts can work together to promote healthier and more vibrant use of indigenous languages. In the language-specific ministry reports, the Kwak’wala translation team shared updates on Bible story translations and audiobook recordings in the Kwak'wala language. Brody and his wife participated in the recording work. They shared how his wife's recorded voice was converted via AI to sound like their grown son's voice. Everyone was amazed
because the sound was truly identical. Even more astonishing was that after hearing his mother's voice transformed into his own, the son volunteered to participate in recording the story of Jesus calming the storm.

Brodie stated that in teaching and learning, the meaning of teaching and learning within the Kwak'wala language encompasses the significance of a process that fully involves and shares life itself 24/7. He explained that this understanding of teaching and learning, rooted in the Kwawawala language's context, cannot be easily replaced with English words that carry the background of an understanding focused more on ‘knowledge transfer’ as a ‘task’ within a set time frame, such as nine to five. limited to work and time. This example illustrates how language and culture are interconnected, embodying entirely different elements of meaning. (Hearing this, Gyoojun thought that they, above all, best embodied and understood the ministry of the Lord described in the Gospel of Mark 3:13-15—how He “took them to be with Him and learn His ways” that he could send them out to preach the gospel and give them authority to cast out demons.)
또한 오후 세션에서 원주민 언어의 활성화를 위해 어떤 일들을 함께 할 수 있을지에 대해 논의했는데, 원주민 선교에 헌신된 방문자들은, 식시카 지역의 예를 들며, 원주민학교에서 자기 언어를 가르치지만 아이들이 언어사용의 장이 없어 아주 단순한 말밖에는 하지 못하는 상황이고, 다른 곳들을 그런 자기 언어 배움의 장도 없어 더 열악한 상황이라고 했다. 이 선교사는 퀘벡 북부 나스카피 원주민 마을의 경우, 심지어는 정부에서 공인하는 대학과정 클래스도 열리고, 어린이부터 어른까지 적극적으로 자신들의 언어를 사용하고, 이에 성경이 기본 교재로 사용되는 상황을 나누며, 공동체마다 차이가 큰 것과, 공동체 자체의 입체적인 노력과 여러 단체의 동역이 필요함을 함께 나눴습니다.
Additionally, during the afternoon session, we discussed what we could do together to revitalize Indigenous languages. Visitors dedicated to Indigenous missions cited the example of the Siksika region, where children learn their own language in school but lack opportunities to use it, resulting in them only being able to speak very simple phrases. They noted that other areas are even worse off, lacking such opportunities to learn their own language. Gyoojun shared the case of the Naskapi Indigenous village in northern Quebec, where even government-accredited university-level classes are offered. Children and adults alike actively use their language, with the Bible serving as the primary textbook. He emphasized that conditions vary greatly between communities and that it requires the multidimensional efforts of the community itself, along with the partnership of various organizations.
주말에도 이 선교사 부는 캘거리의 한인교회 목회자들과 만나 교제하며, 특히 블랙풋 원주민들과 이미 계속되어 오던 단기 선교 사역에 대해 듣고, 성경번역선교와 캘거리 내 한인교회들의 단기선교사역과 박정훈 선교사와의 협력사역의 가능성을 보게 되었습니다.
하나님께서 계속해서 역사하셔서 풍성한 협력이 이뤄지도록 기도해 주시고, 그 결과로 성경번역과 교회의 부흥과 원주민들의 회복과 변혁이 이뤄지도록 기도해 주세요.
Even on weekends, this missionary couple met and fellowshiped with pastors from Korean churches in Calgary. They heard specifically about the ongoing short-term mission work with the Blackfoot Indigenous people, and saw the potential for collaboration between Bible translation missions, short-term mission work from Korean churches in Calgary, and the ministry of Missionary Park Jeong-hoon.
Please pray that God will continue to work so that abundant cooperation may be achieved, and that as a result, Bible translation, church revival, and the restoration and transformation of the Indigenous people may be accomplished.
