애비 프리랜드 선교사(수습 번역 자문위원)가 봄철 컨설팅 세션에서 있었던 이야기를 나눕니다:
“저에게 가장 빛나는 순간은 방골란 팀과 바메싱 팀 모두와 함께 ‘증언(간증, testimony)’이라는 용어에 대해 논의했던 때였습니다.” 그들은 신약성경 초벌 번역을 만드는 과정에서 이 용어를 설명하기 위해 여러 가지 표현을 사용해 보았지만, ‘개인적인 증언’을 의미하는 데 완전히 만족할 만한 표현을 찾지 못했습니다. 자문위원인 마이클과 제가 더 깊이 파고들며, 다양한 가상의 생활 상황을 제시했습니다. 저는 팀에게 이렇게 물었습니다. “만약 두 자녀가 싸웠는데, 한 아이가 다른 아이에 대해 불평하러 당신에게 온다면 어떨까요? 그러다 다른 아이가 들어오면, 당신은 그 아이에게 자신의 입장을 말해 달라고 하고 싶을 텐데요. 그때 ‘너의…뭐라고?’라고 말하겠죠.” 팀원들의 눈이 반짝이며 모두 같은 표현을 내뱉었는데, 대략 “네 입으로 직접 말해 봐”라는 뜻이었습니다. 정말 훌륭했습니다. 이 표현은 아직 공동체 내에서 검증을 마쳐야겠지만, 마치 대박을 터뜨린 듯한 기분이 들었습니다. 기도해 주세요:
- 10월 18일부터 30일까지 7개 은도프 언어로 진행되는 트라우마 치유 워크숍을 위해, 많은 이들이 참여하도록, 에드워드 목사와 트루스 목사가 워크숍을 인도하는 데 지혜를 더해 주시도록, 그리고 참가자들이 트라우마로부터 치유를 경험할 수 있도록
- 은도프 전역을 여행하는 팀원들의 안전을 위해, 그리고 어떤 상황에서도 적절한 말을 할 수 있는 지혜를 얻도록
- 팀원들의 가족, 특히 매일 불안한 상황에 직면해 있는 지역에 거주하는 가족들이 보호받도록
- 마을에서 성경이 더 많이 사용되도록 기도해 주세요, 특히 모어로 된 신약성경이 있는 바붕고, 밤발랑, 바문카 마을을 위하여
- 피우스 목사와 랜스 프리랜드가 번역 자문위원으로 정식 승인을 받도록
- 은도프 클러스터 프로젝트에 필요한 자금이 하나님의 공급하심으로 마련되도록
- 도심에 거주하면서도 번역된 말씀을 사용하는 이들을 위해 하나님을 찬양합니다.
- 왓츠앱 그룹에서 밤발랑과 바메싱 언어로 성경이 읽히고 있음을 인하여 하나님을 찬양합니다.

Ndop Cluster: Cameroon
Abby Freeland (consultant-in-training) shares a story from a spring consulting session:
"A brilliant moment for me was our discussions of the term ‘testimony’ with both the Bangolan and Bamessing teams." They had used several descriptive phrases for this term as they drafted the New Testament but had never found one that fully captured a personal account. As our consultant, Michael, and I probed, we presented various imaginary life situations. I asked one team, “What if two of your children have a fight, and one comes to you to complain about the other? Then the other comes in, and you want to ask him to tell his side. You say, ‘Tell me your…what?’” The team lit up and voiced the same phrase, which roughly translates to “Tell me with your own mouth.’ Beautiful. The phrase will still need to be tested in the community, but it felt like we hit the jackpot.
- Praise God that more translation consulting is underway. Pray for each team as they work on their translation: test it by reading it to people in the community, review it, check it as a team, and check it with a consultant. Pray that God will protect His Word and that it will bear much fruit.
- Pray for the Trauma Healing workshop, Oct 18-30, for seven of the Ndop languages. Pray for strong participation, wisdom for Pastor Edward and Truus as they lead, and for people to experience healing from their trauma.
- Pray for the safety of team members as they travel throughout the Ndop region and for wisdom to know what to say at any given time.
- Pray for protection for the family of team members, in particular those living in the area where they deal with insecurity daily.
- Pray for more Bible use in the villages, especially those that have the New Testament in their mother tongue: Babungo, Bambalang, and Bamunka.
- Pray for Pastor Pius and Lance Freeland to be approved as translation consultants.
- Pray for God’s provision for the funding needed for the Ndop Cluster project.
- Praise God for those who are using the translated Word even though they are living in urban centers.
- Praise God that Scripture is being read in Bambalang and Bamessing for use with Whatsapp groups.
